I was sitting around a pool in Corfu, we went upstairs about 5ish Greek time, Bill was doing something else and I flicked the television in the room, on
I thought it was a film similar to the Towering Inferno, then I realized with true horror the enormity of what was happening when the TV announcer said, "Oh my God, there is another plane heading toward the second tower"...

Can you remember where and what you were doing?

It was my day off from work, and how glad i was for that too...i worked for a holiday company- it was utter chaos there for months afterwards.

well sqad....where and what?
I bet it was BOO
I distinctly remember we even had people phoning up to see if we were doing cheap holidays to the States because of it-unbelievable.
at work when redcrx emailed to say a plane had crashed into world trade centre to which i replied 'whats that?' id never heard of it. Put radio on after that and listened as a 2nd hit. Went up pub after work and remember silence as everyone watched it on big screen
I had just had a swim in my exclusive swimming pool of my expensive villa and after drying off, I walked into my well upholstered study and answered the telephone. It was Mrs sqads friend form the UK saying "Quick, turn on the TV"

As BOO has said, travel has never been the same since that day.

Noooo, how ghoulish was that ?
we went the following year in Dec, which we already had booked before the atrocity, the amount of people taking photos (mostly Japanese..lol) of the gaping hole in the Earth was gruesome, I refused to go and stand on the 'platform' to look into the bowels of Hell
Question Author
it hasn't, I agree and now we are so untrusting of probably innocent people

The company i worked for went bust about a year or so later sqad, largely i believe because of 9/11, we had a franchise with Disney and Florida, which went totally pear shaped due to it.

And yeah Bobbs, the calls we got to see if holidays to the states were going cheap was staggering.
It was my day off and I was at home. I got a bit annoyed because I'd been watching telly and they broke the programme to bring the newsflash, just as the second plane flew in. I phone my bloke at work and everyone there just downed tools and gathered in the staffroom to watch it.

A few days later we had a minute's silence at work. It was in a call centre and we couldn't stop the calls and were expecting that at least a few us wouldn't be able to observe it. I was in tears and, when I looked up, I saw that most of my colleagues were too.
I was a bit miffed as was watching a new Diagnosis Murder when it was interrupted by the news... the first plane had hit and they were still pondering if it was an accident.. then the second hit. I woke the next day wondering what Bruce Willis film I'd been watching the day before.. it was all so bizzare... Blimey.. Nine years!!!

for those of us who are old enough, it is stamped on the brain, like JFKs assisination, Elvis Presley dying, John Lennon getting shot, more recently for the younger generation, Michael Jacksons death?
I was at home on maternity leave with my second son he was 1 month old that day- we were all of us just back from toddler group and we watched the horror unfold on tv - strangely, I was at home form work sick the day that the shuttle blew up and saw that live on tv too. :o(
Was in my Local Library browsing on one of their Computers when I logged on to BBC News site just out of interest.........the first Plane had just crashed into one Tower.......was like watching a Hollywood action Film as it was so unreal to begin with.
Came home and put TV on.......shock horror really as it was then live coverage of the disaster.
i was in guernsey at the time...i guess its 1 of those days you will never forget..as they say ''the world changed forever'' on that day...r.i.p to all those poor people..and may god continue to give strength to the families and to the survivors and indeed all who were affected in some way by that horrific day...
annie....would you please let me know when you are off sick again, as I will spend the day in my anti atomic bomb shelter.
As bobbisox says, it's one of those events where everyone can remember where they were when it was announced.

I meant to say that, during our minute's silence at the call centre, not one person phoned us up. It was totally silent - the phone's started ringing again the moment the silence was over.
sqad, will do - only had about 10 days off sick in the last 27 years so not a frequent occurance!

It was an odd eerie feeling in Lower Manhattan 15 months later too saxy, we went down to pay our respects to the victims and to stand in a moment of silence, it was so quiet there compared to Upper Manhattan, the tiny Church across the road survived to blast and was adorned with flags from across the world, each holding a message of condolence, the first one I saw was a black and white NUFC flag which was emblazoned with "THE GEORDIE NATION FEELS YOUR PAIN" there were loads of similar flags from Celtic/Rangers, WBA, Leeds and so on
