Hadn't seen Jayne's answer.Grass skirts had definitely been banned.The missionaries banned hula dancing, which went with the skirts, too.Whether they also banned the lei garland, as 'pagan', I know not. My source didn't mention the lei/ley.

It must be grass skirts.The missionaries had banned them.The ban was removed in 1874 when a new king came to the throne (King Kalauala )
