Who happens to be the most well known (famous) or greatest thief in History?

And can you name one in the 1900's or 2000's?

You have to say someone like Robin Hood would be pretty famous robbing from the rich to give to the poor.

If you are looking for a modern day thief I would have to say that Gordon Brown does a good job although his policy is much the opposite of Robin Hoods!

never mind the cynics, try looking up charles peace. he was a bit of a lad!
Dick Turpin? Blackbeard? Captain Kidd? Ronnie Biggs? Buster Edwards?

Most well known has to be Dick Turpin.  No thief can be considered great if you consider how most of them do it - upon the misery of others.  E.g.

Turpin and his gang invaded isolated farmhouses, terrorizing and torturing the female occupants into giving up their valuables. A typical attack took place at Loughton, in Essex, where Turpin heard of an old widow woman rumoured to keep at least 700 in the house. When the woman gamely resisted all of Turpin's efforts to discover the money's hiding place, he hoisted her into the open fire until she gave up her treasure. Robbing remote farmhouses was the Gang's speciality, and it was only towards the end of his criminal career that Turpin was actually involved in highway robbery.  Turpin was sentenced to hang at York Racecourse for robbery and murder in April 1739.  So, an all round nice guy really...

The great train robbery was the most famous heist.  There was nothing great about the people who took part when considering the lone victim Jack Mills the train driver who was beaten violently for stumbl;ing into the robbers in the dark.

Can you call any of the Banana republic dictators thievs cuz many of them have robbed the land of the riches and thyen leave, Haden't Imelda Marcos like a million pair of shoes or something, The nazi also stole everything they got from the jews.

Otherwise I would sat that the "greatest thieves" are the unknown the ones that don't get caught. We had a robbery in sweden where they entered an airport and stole money from a Forex shipment, like 100 million dollars, then one of them ratted them out and escaped. And how about the burgulery of Le Louvre
