1.John O' Groats is situated at the northern most extremity of mainland Scotland (but not the most northerly point), it lies 876m/1410km from Land's End at the southern tip of Britain. The name is derived from a Dutch settler Jan de Groot who operated a ferry to Orkney in the 15th century
