Sarah Grimke first took her father to Philidelphia for medical treatment. During this she became aquainted with the Quaker movement. She returned to Charleston in 1818 but went back to Philidelphia in 1821 to be with her Quaker friends. Angelina joined her in 1828 when she converted to the Quaker faith.
