Im currently trying to write a report on boutique hotels but can not seem to find any information on where the concept came from originally or what the characteristics of boutique hotels are.

Any sources of information would be helpful whether it's internet sites, books, newpaper articles etc...

I've only heard this phrase was in NZ, I think its just a language usage thing and that boutique in this context means individual / independent.  Its probably a backlash against samey, chain hotels - as so many things become corporate and homegenised, its great to stay somewhere with a little character.  I also read lots of articles referring to boutique vinyards.

I think if you did a search on Rocco Forte (a man who owns boutique hotels) or Hotel de Russie (which is one of his hotels) you might find something to start you off.  I also suggest you buy a glossie travel/holidays magazine and look for hotels advertised as "boutique hotels" then you can search on those and see if the site gives useful info. on the origins.
