So William l could be King
YEs, it was to assert williams claim on the throne. Which was actually legitimate.
It would be fairer to say William had a claim to the English throne, via Canute if I remember rightly, but Edward (the Confessor)'s relatives Edwin & Morcar had a closer blood claim (though they were children at the time). William certainly had a better claim than Harold - but Harold had the army on his side, and that counted for a lot!
