Further to the question about Evolution vs Adam & Eve in the Internet & Technology section (Dont asdk me why). Would I be correct in assuming that for Adam & Eve to have been the sole people who started the Human Race,, one of these must have happened: Either Adam or Eve, or both, must have had sex with their own children, or their children must have had sex with each other? Isnt that a bit wrong?!

If you take it literally and fundamentalistically, they must have done, yes, though who's to say it was wrong at the time? However, the Adam & Eve story doesn't have to be taken literally, but symbolically. From a modern Christian viewpoint, 'Adam & Eve' simply symbolize the human race in prehistoric times. This is called allegory.
The bible is a work of fiction.
No, incest was quite common for example in Egypt and other places, and not taboo. There are plenty of examples of legal incest in the Bible. I think saying the Bible is a work of fiction is a bit strong though, thewillow. I agree with tartanwiz.
I agree with thewillow, The Old testament is merely Jewish mythology to a non religious person like myself. It isn't fact, there is no evidence for any of the early stories. Cain was one of Adam and Eve's sons and he had relations with his wife (never named in the bible) and they had a son called Enoch. Enoch went on to build a city which was called Enoch as well. Why did he build a city for only a handful of people?? Think of all the planning involved. Surely he'd need archeitects, brickies and plumbers etc.
This is one of those circular questions, like 'hen or egg'. If it wasn't Adam and Eve and their descendents getting it on, it was someone else. Two someones had to get the human race started.
I remember a girl in my religious studies class at school (years ago) asked a minister this question. His reply was that the Bible did not say that Adam and Eve were the only people God created. There would have been others and some of them would have married Cain and Able.
I find it rather sad that some people have no faith and think the Bible is fiction. Of course it isn't meant to be taken literally, but the essence of truth is there for us all to see. Can I suggest you try and read the Bible with an open mind before you make such a sweeping judgment? Try the New International Version, which has been translated into a more easily read language style. Try small portions each day, preferably first thing in the morning. Your day will be much better for it, and your life will become more meaningful as you go on. You might also like to visit some of the Biblical places which are still accessible and which will help you to appreciate that there is a God who is responsible for creation. God Bless.
without digressing or straying into other topics such as the validity of the bible or whether adam and eve were indeed the first couple on this planet, the answer to your question is no it wasn't wrong as sex was merely a way of procriation and not the pornographic/sexual enjoyment we see it in this day and age. Please nobody give me a "Darth thinks this" or "Darth thinks that" tirade i'm not offering my opinion just stating why it was not considered wrong.
Yes in fact it is wrong. One must first consider the word man. Depending on the context that the word is used, it could simply mean 1 or more persons. I have no doubt that Adam and Eve were the first humans created. One must also consider that GOD created several ADAMS and EVES, thus answering the question of where the different races came from. The Bible is pretty specific when it comes to the geneology of man (Jews). As we look at each culture or race, we find that each has a reference point to their beginning. I think the Bible would have stated that, " Cain took his sister and they married, or Cain took EVE, his mother, and she conceived. The Bible never suggest that at all. The Bible says Cain took a wife, who happened to be from another city. Person's during Adams time did live longer than we do today and the bible documents the years. So to say Adam and Eve had a hundred or so years to ge things started would be unfair, besides, that would not answer the question of where Black, White, Chinese, Japanese or Indians came from. Even Sciene and the theory of natural selection can not address this. One can not simply choose genetically what race he or she will be.
The concept of sexual mores adopted in an expanded society and one where different races began to copulate other than through rape and mayhem during invasions did not exist when man was "young".Clearly interfamily sex is common in nature as is homosexuality..including the enforced dominating and sycophantic homosexuality amongst chimpanzees. We also are not far from the original neanderthalls today! Mother points that the bible is a reflection of truth..I contest that and say that IN PART it is such a reflection. Further some places mentioned in the Bible seem NOT to have existed. Some people seem not to have existed..time will tell. Having said that, the new testament alone carries important messages..accompanied by a Political theme later created;God really is insignificcant in teh new testament as is the resurrection. In no sense did Adam and Eve exist other than as an extrapolation as to perhaps there was a man and a woman alone. The story is a nonsense used to indicate a sexual morality. I said elsewhere that the testament stories of Onan and Cain indicate how absurd was the method of introduction of morality, in the brutally political Jewish adaptations of Babylonan law. . One might care to look closely at who fathered and mothered Moses. The story of Moses and of Joseph only make sense if you are gullible. The Christian chuch glosses over extensive polygamy, rape and incest in the testament and amongst its adulated jewish hierarchy whilst condemning it now..why?..because we want to feel safer to have defined relationships and to try to protect against genetic diseases..(whilst the greedy and monsterminded introduce far worse maladies and technology as some strive to improve humanity). There has been a case presented that women inhabited the planet for many thousands of years before any man...this gave me a new view on the only rational possibility of "Adam and Eve" but I am not going into that here. Cheers
