The story goes that some pilots saw unexplained flashes of light in the sky during bombing raids and dog fights. I'm a bit hazy about the full story, but I think the idea was that they were the ghosts of Japanese pilots shot down, and they became known as 'foo fighters' which is where Dave Grohl got the name for his perfectly excellent beat combo.
They were what we'd call today, UFOs. Theyw eere given the name by pilots who reported being accompanied or followed by bright lights in the sky that never harmed them but just followed along no matter what they did, until vanishing. Some people say they were reflections distorted by the perspex of their windows, and you can see something like it if you look at an extreme angle through a scratched window of a passenger plane.

Astronauts of the early American space missions reported seeing dozens of lights following them down

Yeah, it was unexplained "firey balls" seen by pilots in WW2. The name "foo", came from an american comic strip of the time,in which one of the characters used to say "Where there's a Foo,there's a fire." I don't understand it either!!!
