It was written by Eric Spear, and I believe he played it himself on the cornet. I imagine he still gets his royalty cheques.
Eric Spear passed away some years ago, but his family still receive �20,000 plus a year as royalty payments for the famous theme tune.
Nope... according to my old music teacher (who was a pro brass player and who had allegedly met the bloke), eric spears took the fees for the session when the tune was recorded, INSTEAD of getting royalties... you'd kick yourself wouldn't you!!!!
I hate to be pedantic, but in an interview with Darran Little, Corrie's official archivist, he confirms that Mr Spear passed away in 1966, but the royalties still accrue, as is his right as composer of the theme.
