The old definition as I understand it of village, town's and citys was due to the size of the church. So a city would have to have a cathedral, town a large church and village a small or no church. I think now its based on the number of people etc.
There's no reason why a town can't a church as large as a cathedral, in fact I'm sure there are cathedral towns. A town usually has a local authority which a village does not have.
a hamlet has just houses, a village has a church, a town has a market cross (or marketplace) and a city has a cathedral and charter.
thus wells in somerset, which is the size of a smallih town, is a city.
As I said this is the old definition used years ago when we were all much more concerned with religion etc. Today its all different I'm sure.
hate to contradict badbob, but years ago a town still had to have a market to be a town. size of church was immaterial.
The answer is good shopping!
