When the police were being organised by Sir Robert Peel in 1829 the site of the first station was at 4 Whitehall Place, this building overlooked a courtyard, which according to popular tradition, had once been the site of either the Scots Embassy or a house ownned by the King of Scotland, hence Scotland Yard
