The tradition of students climbing buildings originates in Cambridge. Until the 1980's people still did it (climbing the towers of the colleges and chapels particularly in order to retrieve flags placed there as part of initiation ceremonies OR to place a banner from their college on the rival college where it couldnt be reached).
The practice was stopped in the early 80's after a male student fell to his death while trying to retrieve a pair of his Female Don's silk knickers from one of the spires.
Now, the authorities have placed a kind of netting over all the climable buildings so no one can get a foothold. Shame!
