Dixie
O, I wish I was in the land of cotton
Old times there are not forgotten
Look away! Look away!
Look away! Dixie Land.

In Dixie Land where I was born in
Early on one frosty mornin'
Look away! Look away!
Look away! Dixie Land.

Chorus:
O, I wish I was in Dixie!
Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie Land I'll take my stand
To live and die in Dixie
Away, away,
Away down south in Dixie!

Old Missus marry Will, the weaver,
William was a gay deceiver
Look away! Look away!
Look away! Dixie Land.

But when he put his arm around her
He smiled as fierce as a forty pounder
Look away! Look away!
Look away! Dixie Land.

Chorus:
O, I wish I was in Dixie!
Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie Land I'll take my stand
To live and die in Dixie
Away, away,
Away down south in Dixie!

His face was sharp as a butcher's cleaver
But that did not seem to grieve her
Look away! Look away!
Look away! Dixie Land.
Old Missus acted the foolish part
And died for a man that broke her heart
Look away! Look away!
Look away! Dixie Land.

Chorus:
O, I wish I was in Dixie!
Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie Land I'll take my stand
To live and die in Dixie
Away, away,
Away down south in Dixie!

They sometimes used dollar notes printed in Louisiana in French, I believe: dix dollars for $10. Hence Dixie Land.
Did anyone else sing that song A La Elvis styley in their heads? ^^^^
..... and here are some happy cotton pickers .....
Although it is mostly associated with the Confederacy during the Civii War, the tune was also a favourite with the Union. Abe Lincoln was known to be an admirer of the tune.
Another popular marching song was Bonnie Blue Flag. In the John Wayne film "The Horse Soldiers" it's the song the rebel army are singing when the Union soldiers are taking cover across the river and the captive woman tries to make a run for it.
Was 'Dixie' used as a marching song? Wikipedia has this alternative
well the war finished in 1865 and so i guess it wasn't quite around soon enough.
For the historically challenged, if one were caught singing the song listed in the post by The Big Gill it would probably have gotten you shot in the South since that was a reference to General Tecumseh Sherman's highly destructive march to Sea through Georgia, which significantly dimished the Confederacy's ability to continue the war. However, as dot.hawkes and Johnmof iterate, as a marching song or tune, The Bonny Blue Flag was probably the most widely popular among Confederate troops since it named and extolled each State in the Confederacy... the words to Bonnie Blue Flag were written in 1861 by Harry McCarthy, an English-born vaudevillian. He set the words to an old Irish tune, The Irish Jaunting Car.

I have just listened to the tune of 'The Bonnie Blue Flag' and it seems to me to bear more than a passing resemblence to the Irish patriots song 'The Wearing Of The Green' Is this just a coincidence?
