I am no expert on the subject; however I do find it fascinating. I think we have to put ourselves in the mindset of the ancients who built them. Since they were in awe of and probably worshipping the sun and moon, it makes sense that they should represent there deities on earth with a similar shape. Since these astronomical bodies would have appeared as a disc, then representing this with a circular structure seems to be the obvious thing to do, much in the way that our churches are built in the shape of a cross. As for the size, well we have small chapels and huge cathedrals, so it follows that early man would have small circles and large, monumental circles. Whether this was a natural progression or the size was determined by the perceived importance of the site, or perhaps even the manpower or time available is a matter for conjecture. This is by no means a definitive answer, merely my personal thoughts on the subject. Since nobody really knows, I think this is as valid as any other theory. I would, however be interested to hear other peoples thoughts on the subject.
