There are various theories. One suggests that it relates to the pink-coloured coral which is common there and another that it is a sort of algae that appears on the surface from time to time. A third suggests that it is because of the colour when seen from the eastern side at sunset and a fourth takes it to be a mis-spelling of 'reed sea, because of a reddish-tinged grass that grows on certain parts of its shores.
