If you subscribe to the majority opinion held by senior police officers at the time, then the first murder occurred 31st August 1888 and the last on 9th November the same year. However, there are others who argue for more victims, over a sometimes much longer period, than the supposed "5 canonical victims" included in this time frame. Crime fiction author Patricia Cornwell, for example, believes the murders continued for some years after 1888 and that she has solved the mystery of the identity of Jack.
