The charter of Germanus de Loges in the second half of the twelfth century reveals that the church, which has always been known as St. Mary's, was originally dedicated to St. Giles. Close to the church, not much more than an acre in size, is an orchard belonging to the Parochial Council with the remains of a cottage once occupied by the parish clerk, long known as St. Giles' Acre.

..... Saint Giles is the patron saint of cripples, beggars and lepers and his day is September 1st. He lived around 700AD. Saint Giles Fair is held in Oxford on the first Monday or Tuesday following the first Sunday after Saint Giles day. You can see Saint Giles and how he met his end here .......
