I've only ever been to London three times in my life, rich in history, I'd love to have the money to be able to stay down there for a while and soak it all up. I've spent the evening looking on YouTube, found this film, before and after shots of many of London's landmarks. Viewed full page, it's a nice way to spend a little time. Hit the pause button on the half shots!

"I`d love to have the money to be able to stay down there for a while" Don`t say that on AB as most posters seem to hate London. I agree that it is a fascinating city

Really 23?
I've been three times in my 58 years. Once with my dad to meet a boyfriend, once with a boyfriend to the theatre, and once with my son and his ex girlfriend, loved it!

I've never heard of it 23, what's that?
Its a website where people can rent out their properties for tourists - almost like a B&B but without the landlord being on the premesis

Ah, how interesting! Whether I ever get to go again I don't know 23, family commitments. Though never say never. I may well be going to Amsterdam in September, never thought I'd be going there! These things happen out of the blue, I'm excited!

Thank you 23.
Thanks for that Eleena. I am a londoner living abroad and really enjoyed seeing that. It's amazing what can be found on youtube
nice films there, Eleena.

It's hard to tell, but if you look closely you can see Regent St has been completely rebuilt since then and Buckingham Palace got a whole new facade.

There's an old photo here of Nelson's Column being built in 1844 (no film footage in those days)

Very nice Eleena. Nice to see so little change in some shots.
My Mum had some great photographs of her family (mother, father, brother and cats and dogs) in their Anderson shelter during WW2. Life wasn't good in London in the 1940s
Very interesting.
did that last long, 237SJ? As I understand it the Blitz only went into 1941, though there were a few scattered air raids later in the war. They shouldn't have had to use Anderson shelters for V1s and V2s, they arrived without warning.
From what my late Mum told me, they spent every night down in the Anderson shelter. At the the start of the war, they stayed in their own house whilst awaiting the air raid siren and when it came, they went down to the shelter. After a while they realised that there was no point in trying to sleep in the house because the siren would go off so they routinely went to sleep in the shelter.
Jno - yes it lasted for 18 months or so. My mum didn't even go to school for 18 months because the Germans bombed it
thanks, 237SJ
