I was in a class near the end of my school days that was very unruly. There was only one teacher who could keep it in order. He was a ferocious master called Toot campbell who was always ready with the cane.

that's the general idea, sp. It seemed to work pretty well for hundreds of years.

As a last resort prior to being barred from that school, of course. At that stage we would all be desperate to get a turnaround in the life path they were on. That said if any child of mine got that far either I had failed as a parent, or it would prove some children are born so uncontrollable that no one can achieve anything with them.

In my opinion, the minute you raise your hand to someone smaller than you, you have already lost the battle.

There are other ways to punish children.

No we teach them they can muck about in class, threaten teachers and stop others from learning because the result will be loads of pastoral care and hugs thrown at them. I don't advocate the cane or corporal punishment but something has to be done about discipline in schools.

There are many other ways to resolve the issues you mention.

If the cane was so effective, why was it always the same crowd lined up outside the Head's Office to receive it?
