My husband found the answer to these questions in a book, don't know which one and he's not here to ask!!

Clue for Q145 is Johnson, can't think of anything less obvious. Haven't got a clue to Q144 just yet.

Found on Google but link doesn't work

Could It be 'Fair Maid' of somewhere else written by 'Ross' - most point to the Fair Maid of Perth.

The answer to Q144 can be found in some editions of Brewer's Phrase and Fable. Her name was Amy Browne

Q144.For more information see a post about this from silly moo 02/08/2005

THE MAID OF ROSS
One evening in I692, Captain Browne feared, not for himself, but for his only child, Amy, who lived with him and who was in the full bloom of young womanhood now.
Known as "The Fair Maid of Ross," Amy was sought after by all the young officers of the garrison, the most persistent being a lieutenant Raymond Villiers,

And so matters were one evening when "The Maid of Ross" stole up to the battlements to view the enemy camp.  but even as she looked she heard a step and turning found herself face to face with Raymond Villiers. "Amy" he said, 'this siege must end soon and I am anxious to know your sentiments towards me; For the last time I ask: will you be my wife?"

"I know the reason," muttered Villiers. "Donough McC????? is here and you love him. But we'll see! By the breath of my body, we'll see!" and he left her with a revengeful sneer.
. And then, one day, Donough McCa????  Having warned the castle garrison,  led his men westward and there, in a defile overlooking the river, they had a skirmish with the convoy and Donough himself had the satisfaction of ending Raymond Villier's traitorous career. Nevertheless, the "ships" were assembled and
Shortly afterwards, Donough of Clenmourne and his troopers rode westward over the mountains and dispossessed the puritan undertaker who held his home and lands. Then taking to himself as wife "The Fair Maid of Ross," he also took into his care the stout old warden who lived with them for the rest of his days in contentment and ease
