recently i was in Belfast on business, taking breakfast in the Day's Inn that faces the self-proclaimed "loyalist heartland of South Belfast" with my host and a colleague. On the opposite side of the road stood a group who I could best describe as "Sinister men in black ties". My colleague asked the host "what's that about?". without looking up from his eggy soldiers, our host said "I can't see anything - and if you've a notion of self preservation, neither can you".

Not sure I understand the point being made here. Sinn Fein have a policy of no longer 'doubling up' as MPs and MLAs. They are unlikely to put up anything other than a senior 'big' name as a prospective replacement.
Far more interesting are the comments of TIV leader Jim Allistet, mischief-making no doubt in his call for the two main unionist parties to stand aside and let his party have a clear run. I don't follow his logic however. Any one unionist candidate would probably be better than two: any that is, other than the candidate from a party which wants to turn it's back on the peace process. There are a few other things I'd like to say about the TUV but there might be children reading this...

whilst the TUV, and the religious fundamentalists who seem to be closely associated with them, could be considered fruitcakes of the highest order, they are nevertheless fruitcakes that have obtained a great deal of power.
