Existent in every culture the vampire as we know it today is largely due to Eastern European myths.

good question - who was the founding father of vampires, the one who first bit another person? I don't think there's a 'creation myth' in vampirology, though in literature/movies the details of vampirism are fluid, so it's open to anyone to write a story telling how the first vampire came to be.

I read or saw something which said that the terms 'vampire' and 'Dracula' sprang from the days of Vlad the Impaler, who lived in Transylvania and used to impale 'surprisingly' his victims to bleed to death. Think it was a TV documentary now, thinking about it. There's probably loads on the net somewhere ...

I'm not sure where the myths of Vampires in human form arise, but there is a species of bat (somewhere in the southern hemesphere, South America I think) that will pierce your skin and drink your blood given the opportunity. I do believe this is the root of the vampire-bat (Dracula) style myth.

Yes Personica, there's a sort of gazelle in Africa that does this too: Vlad the Impala :-)
The first Vampire legends date back way further than Dracula, who was only 15th century.
These legends are trully ancient and date back as far as the Ancient Egyptians with the Goddess Sekhmet drinking a river of blood.
Also, in biblical mythology, the first wife of Adam was Lilith, not Eve. Lilith is reguarded as the mother of all Vampires in many Vampiric cults in this day.
Most agree that the ealiest legends were a mixture of the two, or perhaps even an older Goddess that has been lost in time.

lol jno!!!

I was recently told about a Danish diplomat in Austria of all places in the 17th century (I think). He send home stories about a vampire on the loose. Not that this is some sort of creation story, but it shows that apparently some took the vampire stories relatively seriously at that time in Austria :)
