Hi, without giving tons of unneccassary details, me and my girlfriend, after 6 years of being very happy, are going on the trip of a lifetime to Australia next month. I have been thinking of asking her to marry me and see this as the perfect opportunity. We're both 25 and are not a very traditional couple - i.e neither of want kids, and we have never really discussed marriage with eachother etc...there are a few problems/worries I have, her Mam and Dad are quite close to her and we all get on great...should I ask her father first before I leave? Is this now 'old-fashioned' and unneccassary, or still a good idea? Also I need help with the timing. Should I ask towards the start/middle or very end of the holiday? I understand there are no definite answers but I don't have many people I can ask without spoiling the surprise or that have been in a similar situation. Thanks.

I would ask her father as it shows respect and good manners.

I would also leave the proposal until nearer the end of the holiday for obvious reasons.
Our Son-in-Law asked my husband while our daughter and I giggled in the kitchen ( she knew that SiL was going to ask.) We thought it was a lovely thing to do ( They had been together 8 years by then )
No experience of this so I can only give my opinion, but I would be over the moon if my bf asked my Dad. It is kind of old fashioned though, but does show respect and a great deal of thought.

Perhaps you should discuss marriage at some point during the holiday?
Why get married and spoil a good relationship?

ummmm....left you a message on CB FAO ummmm.
