Tracing an adopted relative

Hi can anyone advise me on how to find information for an adopted relative. My uncle was born in Fulham but was adopted in Derbyshire - all I have is the adopted father's full name and not a lot else. Any pointers would be appreciated as I haven't got a clue where to start.

Thanks for that In A Pickle. Unfortunately my uncle has died and its his immediate family (my cousins) that have asked me to see if I can trace anything. He was born in Fulham and adopted through the Homeless Children's Aid and Adoption Society in 1930 when my uncle was 1. I only have his birth mothers name and don't know if that was a married name or if it was a case of pregnant out of wedlock. I am assuming the latter.
