for my Gt Gt Gt grandfather. Gt Gt GF is John Litherland b 1812 in Wolverhampton Staffs married in Leeds? 1843 to Ruth nee Osborn b1815 of scarborough. I seem to have come to a halt as most of the info is in the Census and any records before this need more detail than I have.

Are you sure he was born in Wolverhampton?
The censuses seem to show he lived in Wolverhampton but was born in Birmingham..............
There's a possible baptism in Shuttington warwickshire 19 jan 1812

Thank you I'll have a look at Family search dotty. I haven't signed up for membership yet.

Craft I had him as being born in Wolverhampton, the Birmingham link seemed a bit tenuous I wasn't sure I had it right. There are quite a lot of holes in my tree atm anyway.
Oddly, neither the originl IGI nor the new search pilot has the parents recorded in the transcription and so I will search for any other Litherland baptisms at that time in Shuttington
no need to sign up for membership it is free gran
Was he married before?
In the 1841 census there is a John Litherland born 1816 with a wife called Hannah born 1811, and a Hannah Litherland died in Leeds in 1841.
The only thing that makes me ask is that your John and this one were both Nail Makers.
A Timothy Litherland ws baptised 1815 at Shuttington son of Thomas and Sarah
Thomas bap 1813
but there is also a Richard and Mary having children baptised in Shuttington at the same time.
Shuttington is more Tamworth thn Birmingham though
A John Litherwood born 1812 married Hannah Dodsworth born 1812 04/01/1835 in St Peters, Leeds.

I don't know about him craft, or anyone except John b 1812 that far back, There seems to be a lot of the family working in Shoe/boot making, I have a Walter b 1845 who was a cut nail maker, his daughter Ruth b1867 was working age 14 as a nail machine feeder. My Gt Gt Grandfather Alfred b 1852 was a leather cutter and Harriet Ann was a boot machinist.
^ sorry Litherland.............
was Ruth married to someone called Guest cos it looks like her daughter maria is listed as John's daughter-in-law instead of step-daughter
He married Ruth Guest in 1843 in Leeds dotty............
someone on ancestry already has your john's family, he was baptised Birmingham St Martin 19th feb 1810 son of Samuel and jane Litherland.
John and his first wife had a daughter elizabeth born 1837 . he died 14 aug 1872 is that correct?
yeah Ruth Osborn married John Henry Guest in 1837 and so they were both widowed when they married in 1843.

Thanks for the Tamworth link dotty, I had dismissed that earlier, it could be the generation I'm looking for. I saw the name Ruth Guest and I saw Maria too, but didn't know who she was. Ruth Hannah b1867 married in 1889 but I thought it was Russell. And Gt gt Grandma Ruth Osborn b 1815 I think was married in 1843 to John b 1812. The only other Ruth is b 1876 to Frank b1853 and Harriet Ann (that's a strange story).
Craft the Leeds link is interesting I have some names that I can't match up with the families I have. They all come from Hunslet Leeds, I will follow them up tomorrow. It could be that John married Hannah, I have it that he married Ruth in 1843. I'll have to log off now, thanks very much to you both for your help, I've been getting nowhere with this lately.
ayg it's...............
1. John Litherland married Hannah Dodsworth 1835 in Leeds - Hannah died in 1841.
2. Ruth Osburn married John Henry Guest 1837 in Leeds - John died in 1842.
3. John Litherland married Ruth Guest nee Osburn in 1843 in Leeds.
