Are ps1 controllers fully compatible with the ps2 console? Plug in and play with no need for adapters or what not?

No only for use with the PS1 you can play PS1 games on the PS2 though.

Yes PS1 controllers are compatible with PS2, but memory cards and other PS1 peritherals are not, except games...
