playstation was released in 1994(ish) and is now very out of date but i take it you actually mean playstation 2 ?! basically in terms of hardware, xbox is far more advanced than ps2 but for a 6 yr old i would reccommend a ps2 as it has more games aimed at a 'younger' market.but you could always get him an xbox and use it yourself !!!
mainly the Xbox is made by microsoft and the PS2 is sony. The Xbox does have better AI (grafics flow smoother) and both consols have roughly the same priced games. A few games were only released for Xbox and others only on PS2. though most PS2 games are now also released on the Xbox. The main consideration when buying for kids is that they get bored with games reletivly quickly, as they are around 40 each for a new top title, it is best to buy the platform most of your sons friends use. This enables your son to swap games with his mates for a while and will dramaticaly incrase the contents of your wallet.

Many thanks Mattk and Dinsdale. Does the X Box play DVDs. Also Currys are doing a deal at mo 99.99 for X Box and 3 games is this good deal
The Xbox will play DVDs but you need to buy an extra part for this (around 20) The currys deal sounds to be good, although if you dont have a choice of which games you are receiving they may not be suitable for a 6 year old, this is a very good question to ask the sales rep before you buy
u could also do what i did......buy the bundle even if it comes with games u dont want then sell them on ebay ! this way u get it even cheaper....jump on board now - halo 2 is less than 1 month away !
I would go for the PS2...sony have just released a slimmed down version of PS2 and it looks great....Same as PS2 but about 1/3 size...also Sony have got the majority of the market and will probably win out in the end....
defnatly ps2!
You can play DVDs on the PS2 aswell as normal music CDs. It also plays the old Playstation games which can be bought very cheaply.
I would go for the PS2. There are also more second hand games for sale in the shops, which you can buy for as little as a fiver. Don't let anybody tell you that expensive games are better - they are just newer. Second hand games for sale at 10 were probably 40 a year ago.

Both myself and most of my brothers have owned both. I had both at the same time for a while, but as soon as Grand Theft Auto came out for the X Box, I sold my PS2. The X Box is currently the more advanced system and just does some stuff better. The load times are shorter (or at least less frequent) because of the hard disk inside. The disk also means that skids you put on the race track today will still be there next year 'cos it records that stuff. It is cr:ap that you have to buy an adaptor to play DVDs, that's just pure meanness from Mr Gates, the PS2 will do it with the regular controller.

The PS2 on the up-side has a long history and so has loads of games, many cheap. But I suspect that any and all kids will want the newest stuff so this mightn't be a saving grace.

In case you haven't guessed, I'd say X Box any day! Myself and my brothers will be bringing them back home at christmas, networking them all together and if we can find enough tellys, have a huge Halo2athon for days, if not weeks!
