Ps3 GTA 4 helicopter controls

I am on the 'Paper Trail' mission on GTA4. For some reason I keep losing the helicopter and it's hard to control even though I have done the other heli missions. How do I get the helicopter to move quickly forward? On PS3? Please help.

The game is fantastic but the helicopter bit is annoying as they always are.
