That and watch videos that show in slow-mo just what effect side, top, screw, etc, have on a cue-ball.

Best advice I was given was 'dont grip the cue tightly'. It didn't make me a champion but it made me a better player.
Dennis taylor had a tutorial series on tv which was helpful too.
