How are you getting on with this? I've read mixed reviews but the general concensus is good.

I quite like it. the car choices are a little more limited compared to forza4, but it's mainly the "proper" race cars that are missing.

My main complaint would be the race classes are quite low, I'm upto the 5th wristband and am only just starting to get the chance to race in S class cars and even now some of the races require me to use b or c class cars, which just seem sooo slow :)

Visually it's very pretty but I'm going to have to complete some of the outpost challenges soon so I can jump to the outposts for free (10000 credits each time otherwise) to save me having to drive for 5+minutes between some of the more far flung races.

The tuning options are pretty much the same, and from a quick look the design options seem to be too (so you'll like it) and the music is brilliant.

The game does seem to like the vw corrado though, it gave me one to start and I've won another 3 of the things now :)
A friend of mine wants to know if he should get it. Is it something you can recommend with a clear conscience?
If they like driving games and liked the previous forza games then yes.

How does the online element work? In TDU if you're signed in to XBL then even in free roam mode you'll often see other players driving around 'doing their thing'. This makes it feel like a true online gaming environment.

I'm guessing that in Horizons you have to invoke an online element like a race, rather than being in an online environment even in free-roam mode?

Played the demo and thought it was only ok. Doesn't have the soul or depth of proper Forza for me.

Quite arcadey in places too. Head on crashes with other cars merely pushes them backwards and inflicts no actual damage.

I've heard it described as Forza Lite.

I too played the demo but it was devoid of enough features to allow me a proper appraisal. The handling did feel a bit 'arcadey'. I seemed to be taking corners much too fast and getting away with it.
