i want to batter some cod, which i've never done before, but all the recipes i'm finding include beer. i don't drink beer so don't have it in the house and i don't want to buy any especially. is there a basic batter you can make with ingredients you would normally have in the house? (and can you actually taste the beer in the batter). does the beer really make the best batter?
