I have worked out that whenever I drink wine (red or white) I get a terrible tummy ache for the following day. The pain is not disimilar to period pain and my tummy bloats out! Yes, I do understand that the simple answer to this is "don't drink wine", but why does it happen, is an intolerance, allergy and is it common?

It could be IBS, which can have different triggers for different people. Red wine can make my tummy quite bad too. Unfortunately moderation or avoidance is the only answer I'm afraid, although eating/drinking something quite fibre-full before you go to bed after drinking can help you flush your system out a bit quicker the next day (sorry!)
Could be the wine.I have a sulphite allergy and if i drink wine ( amongst other food stuffs, but wine seems to trigger the worst reaction) i spend ages sneezing like a maniac. The next day i sound and feel like i have a really bad cold, stuffed nose, sore throat and aching joints, which lasts for a couple of hours.
