My 14month old has had a nappy rash for a couple of days now, it's really red and feels warm to the touch and he stiffens his legs and whimpers everytime i go near his bottom, it's upsetting to see him like that and have done all i can to aleviatte his distress, gentle bathing, Sudacrem, leaving nappy off, but i don't think it's getting better. I read on the Canestan website that you can use this for nappy rash! Have any of you tried this? Is it safe to use on him?

Thank you

Having done a quick Google it would appear that Canestan is very good for nappy rash treatment.  Many use it and GP's even prescribe it.

As for further prevention this site appears to give good advice:

Hope your little one gets sorted out soon.

Why not give your local health centre a phone and speak to the Health Visitor?
first i would go to my doctor ,it could be a reaction to any soaps or creams you use.fullers earth powder from the chemist is soothing to the skin -sit him in the bath with just warm water for a few minutes then pat him dry and put on the powder -put a little pair of underpants on him to keep the powder in place -try to do this a few times during the day and hopefully itl work,it did for mine.

i used Johnsons nappy rash cream on my daughter and it worked a treat.

Hi there, I've had this problem before as well.  my little boy's at 12 months was REALLY bad, it was red and completely peeled off.

My GP gave me Conotrane which worked WONDERs, it was even soothing for him each time we applied it on his bum. The GP said most others like Timodine (not sure about Canesteen) were too strong at that advanced stage of the nappy rash.  Conotrane is very mild and acts as a lovely shield from urine and poo from the baby's bum which can cause nappy rash too.  Do make sure you change his nappies often, esp. change ASAP when he does a poo.

We had been using Timodine for him which made it really worse, but didn't know.  An emergency GP had prescried it for us!!  Hope this helps.

HI there ... egg white is good on sores and nappy rash .. it used to be a treatment for burns in the bad old days .. my mother and MIL told me about it and I tried it on my baby's nappy rash and it worked.. it allows the skin to breathe but protects it and allows it to heal .. apparently .. could be worth a try .. leaving a nappy off  of course as much as you can ... poor baby .. hope it improves soon x
nickienickie im so glad that someone else has heard off the egg white treatment . when my son had nappyrash my mum told me to do this and after i had stopped looking at her as if she was mad i tried it and was amazed that it actually worked.

Have you changed his brand of nappies lately?  Just a thought.  Being an oldie, my son used to wear towelling nappies with a liner and had no problems.  I switched him to a well known brand of disposables and he got nappy rash for the first and only time.

Diprobase, available from a pharmacist is amazing.  It provides a protective barrier and is soothing.  It is very mild and I am sure can be used on babes.  Although I would ask a pharmacist.  I know it can be used on really bad exzma (spelling!)

Good luck.

We used Metanium, it's a barrier cream.  It comes in tubes & you can get it from Boots.  Really good.

my 17 month old is suffering badly at the moment too. It really does look like a burn. It's hard to keep the nappy off though as the teething also brings lots of runny poos with him ( which is why he got the nappy rash in the first place)

I was so upset at holding him down, and he definately screamed more when the cream went on that i thought what I would like on me, if i had it and so i tried a bit of calamine lotion, dabbed on gently. He immediately stopped crying and actually said "more". I'm sure it soothed and two days later, it's almost gone. \Might be worth a try?

Hi there, what a shame for both of you. We used metanium on our daughter because sudocrem was hopeless for her. also dry adding a wee bit salt to the bath water it really helps as well. That was a top tip from my moth-in-law who is a nurse x

I know you guys probably know this, but when teething, try to give baby as much water to drink as you can, to produce dilute urine.  As babies tend to lose so much water when they drool during teething, pooh and pee can often become much more concentrated, and this is commonly why nappy rash occurs.

Good luck.

stressed out - I've only just perused this thread. After all the info you've received, I do hope your little one soon feels much better. Also hope you're feeling less stressed!

Hi everyone, thanks alot to all of you for your help! I went to boots and got some Metanium in the end, i was advised to clean him at every change with water and dab dry with a towel and then apply the cream. That was Wednesday! It is much better now...This cream worked great, had a strong alcoholic smell though, lol!

Thanks again x

a suggestion to parents at their wit's end with diaper rash that lingers for long. Some babies (boys and girls) get yeast infections from antibiotics their on or other reasons. Bad diaper rash can heal in a days time if monitered well. So lingering diaper rash could be a sign of a yeast infection. A tip for parents with this problem, try athlete's foot cream. My daughter was always getting these from medications for ear infections and instead of hauling her to the doctor's every time for steroids creams that take forever to work, we just kept a bottle of athlete's foot powder (any brand ) and tube of athlete's foot cream( also any brand cheap ok too) on hand. after a day you could tell if it was working and you knew it was what was wrong. If not it doesn't hurt them. If not cleared up after a few days, then a doctor visit needed. crazy sounding but the yeast infection killed by the anti-fungal medicines in these treatments. and most are okay in that area for jock itch.

My son was very ill as a baby and permanently on antibiotics.  This caused him to get a yeast infection which made his nappy rash so bad it took the skin off his poor little bottom.  The doctor perscribed canestan which made his scream when I put it on.

Then someone reccomended a product called Vasegen - it is a silicone barrier cream that contains camomile.  It stops and nappy fluid etc., getting to the skin whilst soothing and healing.  Within 2 days Richard's bottom was healed and better and I have never looked back.

I now reccomend this product to everyone - find a stockist and get a lot of it and keep it instock - great on chickenpox when they get that later in life as well!!!!
