Is anyone making the Delia Smith Christmas cake form Waitrose?
What a rip off! OH decided to try it, £10 for basically flour, fruit and spices then he had to buy eggs, marzipan, jam, brandy, decorations etc for it plus cake tin, cake board and other bits and pieces we didn't already own plus petrol costs for when he 'nipped to the shops' for something he'd forgotten!. Must have cost us aout £50 in total so far so it had better be good! Think i'll also buy a ready made cake for under a tenner and have a cake test. He's having fun doing it though but think of all those calories!!

I got a £3 xmas cake kit from Morrisons. I haven't made it yet but I have got extra fruit to go in it.

Mind you I don't know why I bothered we don't even like rich fruit cake so probably won't even eat it!!!
We as a family do not care for it so will not bother this year.
I read an article recently by a food writer-and she agreed that Deliah's 'cheat' was a bit of a con,and if you enjoyed making your own,it took away a lot of the pleasure involved in searching out the ingredients and making the cake from scratch. For £10 you can buy a lot of the ingredients, and most proficient home cooks will have much of it already.
I had most the stuff, bought the rest of the stuff and made it a couple of weeks back. Reminds me, it needs "feeding" tonight.

OK, so you might be able to buy one cheaper - but its not really the same as a home made one.
