can anybody tell me what it means if a road is adopted as i have bought a book about the meaning of street names in the area i live and some of them seem to be adopted.

When builders/developers start to construct houses, the roads within the estate are technically theirs. However, once the building is completed, the roads are generally 'adopted' by the local council/authority. That is, they take them into their care as far as repair, drainage etc is concerned.

If an 'unadpoted' road requires any maintenance, the responsibility and funding should be shared equally by the residents

Yep, an adopted road is one which the Council has a legal duty to maintain

Just to point out that, in Scotland, the occupants are not legally bound to maintain the "unadopted" road. For example, if 11 of you decide to get it resurfaced and the 12th occupant refuses to pay then they do not have to.
