African grey

About 10 years ago, I had an African grey parrot, however it sadly passed away.

I never thought about getting another until Tonight, and was wondering if anybody else has one, if so where about's did they buy it from / how much?

Is there any tips / advice you would give about buying one?

There are some great information on the web for African Greys. I have ahd mine for 20 years now. He is a wild caught bird from way back when it was still legal to so that. He is very friendly to me and apart from the odd asthma attack he has, he is in good shape. The avian vet I use thinks he could be about 30 years old.

I used to breed greys many moons ago and a lot has changed over the years.
The best advice I can give you is to be prepared to spend as much time as you can with her/him. Make sure you give supplements of Vitamin D. calcium and probiotic. I use "Potent brew" weekly for mine along with Calcivet, all available at www.24parrot.com. Fab website.

I always trim the flight feathers on my birds as I know of people who have had bird crash and die due to flying at windows.It does not hurt them if done correctly and to look at them you wouldn't even notice.

Ooo..and don't forget to put them in your will, they live an awful long time!!! Good luck,

P.s I have never covered my birds at night. They are quiet as soon as I turn out the light. Also with greys it can increase the risk of inhaling more of their feather dust which can cause breathing problems in the future.

there are alot of greys on youtube look at some vids on there and ask the owners questions through youtube. I find that with all the pets i buy they are best bought from breeder at shows. Look to see if you have a bird show near you? Rspca probably have one somewhere in the country and you can use their website to find it. local ads always have them too but these last two suggestions I would not go for becasue the animal may have behavioural problems and be a nightmare.
