Why is the bottom of the champagne bottle flat?  Other bottles of Champagne have a concave bottom so you can hold the bottle.

I read it was so nothing could be hidden under or in the bottle, like poison to kill the person Cristal was made for
According to the Louis Roederer the bottle was specially designed to look differently from all other Champagne bottles. They say: Tsar Alexander II t was a champagne connoisseur who made it his personal mission to acquire the very best wines for himself. It did not please him to find that the champagne served at his table was indistinguishable from the champagne served at the homes of his courtiers.
On hearing of Tsar Alexander's displeasure, Louis Roederer commissioned a master Flemish glassmaker to design a new and unique crystal glass bottle, so solidly constructed that it could be made with a flat bottom.
The dimple on the bottom of a champagne bottle is called a PUNT.

It is there, not to help you hold the bottle, but to add strength to the glass, so the bottle won't shatter under the pressure of the fizz.

As Pinotage says, there are other ways to make the bottle strong which don't require a punt.
