Has anyone found something in a can of juice that shouldn't be there? I bought a 6 pack of cola and after unwrapping the plastic noticed one of the cans was a bit bashed. Anyway i poured it into a glass and noticed it was flat and then something slimy came out, it's making me feel queasy just thinking about it ,so i phoned Coca Cola who say they are sending out a pack so that i can return the can and the object. Do you think i should go along with this or get Environmental Health involved?  I'll certainly never drink straight from a can again that's for sure.

I bought some fruit and when I went to take a bite out of my pear a big bug ran out and across it.  So I ate it.

In Scotland and England the common law of negligence is based on the principles laid down in the famous snail-in-the-ginger-beer-bottle case of Donoghue v Stevenson. This case established for the first time that the manufacturer of goods owes the consumer a duty of care to ensure that they are not harmed as a consequence of the manufacturers negligence in this case allowing a snail to enter the bottle. This case is the backbone of the law of negligence, but one of the essential features which is often forgotten is that the bottle was opaque and the pursuer was therefore unable to see the snail. The House of Lords was quite clear that if the bottle had been clear and the pursuer had gone ahead and drunk the ginger beer in the knowledge that there was a snail in the drink the manufacturer would not have been liable because although the manufacturer was held to owe a duty of care to the consumer, the court also pointed out that Scots law recognises that individuals have a duty to look after their own health and safety, and failure to do so can result in a claim for negligence being defeated.

I suspect that Coca Cola might want to cover up your little find.

I remember reading a story in the paper about someone who found a dead mouse in a can of supermarket own brand baked beans.

Luckily the worst I have ever found is a dead moth in a bar of nut chocolate, years ago when I was in sixth form. I sent it back to the manufacturers who advised me that their investigations showed that the moth larva had been inside the nut and it had hatched and munched its way out of the nut after the chocolate bar had been made. They sent me a massive box containing one of every chocolate product they made, and 25 vouchers for their other products. My mum said it was the best Christmas present ever!

I would contact Trading Standards and/or Environmental Health before posting anything off.

Many yars ago, I heated up a tin of peas only to find a large bloated caterpillar amongst them in the saucean. Tesco gave me 5 & replacement tin of peas! In those days we didn't seem to have all the legislation we have today.

*years

someone I know once found a big clump of seasoning in a packet of crisps manufactured by a well-known company. at the back of the pack was a section you could write to if you were not satisfied with the product. So she wrote, explaining that she found this clump in the packet and enclosing it for proof. She rhetorically asked what would happen if a kid swallowed this.

The company sent her vouchers to buy x number of crisps as compensation.

that should read x amount of packets, not crisps.

When i was 8, i got some sweets from th ice cream van and amongst them were some fishing hooks! The bloke gave me a 24 box of crisps and 20 to keep quiet. This was in 1977, and for 2 months i was king of the estate. I single-handedly cornered the kola-kube market! Happy days.........

Smudge - the legislation set down in the case I mentioned above was circa 1932.  The precedent was there, you probably just didn't know about it.

Thanks Octavius - I should rephrase my comment about legislation. Yes, the legislation was there, but in those days, there wasn't the same compensation culture there is today. Nowadays, people see notes in front of them, for the least little thing that happens!
I guess you might have considered this but... you should never eat/drink from dented cans.  Apparently the inside is coated in a certain something to stop reactions with the metal etc.  When dented, this can be broken, and so the contents go off.  Perhaps the gungy slime was a reaction with all the sugary rubbish lurking in coca cola?

Going by something someone said earlier on answerbank, it is not always a good idea to send the offending item back to the producer. This is because if they have it then you have no evidence of what has happened. Sorry can't remember when this was said and what question it was in.

The advice given was that you tell the company that the item is availiable for inspection at your home whenever they would like to see it. failing that if you do send it off take photographs etc.

And yes, I think it probably is a good idea for Environmental Health to be involved, just in case.

Just a note about drinking from the can.  Forget what may be inside the can, you will have no idea how many rats have been peeing against the cans while it is in the warehouse.  A surgeon friend of mine has been investigating cases of leptospirosis and other nasties caused amongst young men who drink beer from the bottle.

i once bought a pizza from tesco's and when we got home and opened the packet there was everthing there should be except there was a big pile of what had an uncanny resemblence of vomit.IT DEFFINATELY WASNT EVEN THE TOPPING AS IT WAS A DIFFERENT COLOUR!! so we took it back and tesco's aggreed with what we said (when i say tesco's i mean some 16 year old at the complaints desk) and they sent it off to the lab and we personally never got the results we just got a 30 coupon for tesco's and a free pizza WHICH WENT STRAIGHT IN THE BIN!!! i also have had a fly in a bottle of juice and we had an exotic spider living in our  bunch of bananas from sainsbury's we got the spider and covered in bleach and stamped on MANY TIMES!!
