When I go over to the US -I practically live off Mountain Dew "Code Red". It's carbonated but not heavily, it's not intensely sweet like some canned drinks are and it's cherry flavoured. If you live near London, you can buy it at Cyber Candy in Covent Gdn but it's over a quid a tin.
The standard Mountain Dew ("Do the Dew", here in the U.S.) is very similar to 7-UP... lemony or citric after taste... fairly high in caffeine and sugar content for a boost (needed or not)...

Actually, Eddie is correct if the name 'Mountain Dew' is used in the context of "White Lightnin', Moonshine, Hooch or Who -Shot-John", which are illegally distilled spirits made mainly in the hills and hollows on many southern States here in the U.S. But, there is a citric based soft drink made and marketed by Pepsi-Cola named Mountain Dew... also with a variant called "Code Red" as previously mentioned. I would have expected it was for sale in the U.K. ...
I also know Mountain Dew to be home-made rum and It taste like tequila.

My neighbours use to argue over white lightening...
And in Ireland there is a drink that they make in a shed or farm building, usually up in the hills where nobody knows that it exists. It is called POTEEN. Has anyone out there ever had it or drank it? Some put clove rock or brandy balls into to flavour.
Hi Whitelady, yes I had some Welsh Poteen at a festival a few years back, some traveller kids were going around with about a litre of it (and a stack of plastic cups) selling it for a quid a shot! I thought it was pretty good, VERY strong though; I'd guess about 80-90% ABV I wouldn't like to drink it too regularly, aside from the huge strength, there is a risk that it can contain methyl alcohol (as well as ethyl).
i also remember the old folks used to make it from very ripe bananas. that sucker was strong.
