The display on the front of the microwave works. I turn the dial until the digi display shows the time i want it to cook. I press the start button but nothing happens. The digi display does the countdown as if the microwave is cooking but no noise. The light is supposed to go on inside when you open the door and yet again when its cooking. However the light only goes on when the door is just to say shut...when the hooks in the door have contact within the holes in the microwave body but once you push the door shut so that the hooks have secured the door shut the light goes off and never comes back on.

Nothing at all..
It's knackered
Panic......I love it when you talk techie.....
I was going to use a more technical term, but Spare Ed might ban my reply
Maybe a minor technical glitch, like the door switch is faulty......
... and if it is Paddiez, the repair would probably cost more than a new microwave, if you can find anyone to do it.
faults like this can be due to several things:
-open windings on the logic pcb transformer
-bad relay
-bad triac or other component.
-liquid, grease or dirt in the touch panel

A tech will be able to diagnose this in a matter of minutes. You should never even think about opening the oven yourself, there are lethal voltages present in capacitors which have even killed skilled techs stone dead. Take it to a local white goods place for a relaible diagnosis not based on internet guesswork.
good luck!
