because they are made with cheese?
i've never had a cheesecake with icing on the top. do you mean icing like cake icing, or a dusting of icing sugar?
cheese cakes are made with cream cheese but sweetened like a cake, hence the name.
Do you mean good old London Cheesecakes with the icing on the top with coconut strands?
I've no idea why they call them cheesecakes.
Perhaps because the coconut looks like grated cheese:)
Some New York cheesecakes have a topping on them made from icing sugar, cream cheese and milk. I'm not sure if those are the ones you mean?
i think shaneystar's right, they're london cheesecakes, which apparently don't have cheese anywhere near them! they're puff pastry filled with frangipane then iced and dipped in coconut strands. why they're called cheesecakes is anyones guess, would be interesting to know though.

Thats right shaneystar and ethendron. The good old London cheesecakes, I was beginging to think it was a made up thing from childhood. The strands do look like grated cheese. Will keep checking back to see if anyone knows. Thankyou for your input.
