A hairdryer is pretty good.
leave the door open
First unplug it.
Then leave the door open slighty. Put a bowl of hot water inside on one of the shelves, so the steam rises. this will help it along.
always let the freezer thaw itself out, never go poking about in there with sharp implements.
if you've got an electric heater put that in it to speed the process up
Is it an upright or a chest freezer?

I defrosted an upright freezer by manouvreing it to the back door and using the hose on it...........fully defrosted in 20 minutes. And it still worked ok afterwards.
i know it would not be recommended and you do need to be very careful - electricity and water are not good together of course, but I do normally switch off and then give the bad areas a bit of a blast with the hairdryer and also use the bowl with hot water. Normally done very quickly ready to be switched back on.
Put a pot of boiling water in the freezer and close the door. It will defrost quickly.
my ex used a chisel...

when I bought the replacement the next day, I made sure I got a frost-free version.
