Do Sexomniacs really exist?

I'm watching a docu on Virgin 1, regarding a variety of mostly men who claim to suffer from a sleep disorder, recently labeled by experts as "Sexomnia".

These men have sex with their partners, sometimes forcibly and aggressively whilst claiming to be in deep sleep. One was even taken to court for raping a woman at a party, again he claimed to have no recollection of the event, as he was asleep.

Is this really a viable condition or is it just an excuse for these people to craftily get what they want, when they want it? Why also, has it only recently become a recognised condition? It appears it didn't exist before then.

They say the guy who forces his partner for sex has Sleep Apnoea, but I think I do too, but I don't ravage my partner in the middle of the night. Mind you, he would probably welcome it if I did.
Oh dear!!!...my ex used to do that........not sure he ever STAYED asleep, but he did seem to be asleep when he started-lol
