If I buy some poppy seeds from the local supermarket. (The ones sold as food ingredients) Can I plant them in my garden to grow or have they gone from some process which will prevent their growth?

I wouldn't bother - it's cheaper to buy poppy seeds that you want to grow from a garden centre, in a seed packet!! They're much more expensive if you buy them as food ingredients!
