fungi growth in the kitchen

The white wood panel underneath my neighbour's kitchen cabinet has started to discolour showing brown/ black patches and recently she has noticed some fungi(mushroom like) growth from underneath it. Her kitchen is clean otherwise. Could it be damp? She has her dishwasher there and I thought that perhaps the water may have been leaking but my neighbour says that she has not noticed any leak. Could anyone suggest what may be causing the fungi growth?

Definitely damp, either from a leaking appliance - very likely if confined to one place - or rising damp.

Have a good feel of the surrounding timber
if it's a under the counter dish washer pull it out dry the area under it then put it back but put some newspaper under it then run a cycle, you'll soon know if it's leaking by checking the paper after the cycle!

try and get the paper right back to the wall.

Thanks. Could my neighbour's home and buildings insurance be helpful in this matter?
