In Spain, an alternative to the expensive saffron is yellow colouring. I know that it only gives food colour and doesnt have a taste. Do any of the supermarkets sell this yellow powder?

Is it turmeric?
I am not sure what you have in mind...but I would use tumeric. It would give foods such as rice the colour you want without adding a particularly strong flavour.
I also thought of turmeric before realising that in the cake making department of the supermarket you often see food colouring liquids in various colours.... maybe the yellow can be found there (in Tesco's it's just to the right of the bread flour and near the dried fruit/cake decorations). Regarding turmeric, I do find it has a fairly strong taste which is ok in lentil dals and veggie stews/curries etc.

Its not turmeric its just a tasteless yellow powder that is sold in spain as a cheap alternative to saffron. I will check sainsburys next time I am there in the international food section.
it will be tumeric and has a slight earthy flavour I find. However, I recently bought some safron in a lovely keepsake tin for just 1.99 (about 50 strands) I used about 10 for a pan of rice but wasn't too impressed with it. Over-rated I think.
I always use turmeric for that yellow colouring!!

It is definitely much cheaper than Saffron!!

I know what you are talking about. It is not turmeric, it is called "colorante amarillo" which does indeed mean yellow colouring. They don't sell them in supermarkets in the UK. I know because when I travel to the UK to visit my sister, I take her several packets. I
