I got a cafetiere and some packs of ground coffee at christmas. I was just wondering if I bought a coffee grinder and some coffee beans can they be used in the cafetiere? If so is it simply a matter of putting the ground beans into the cafetiere and pouring in hot water, the same way as with the packet stuff? Any pointers welcome.

Yes, freshly ground coffee beans can be used in the cafetiere/filter machine, in the same way as the packs.
Once you open the pack, store in an airtight container in the fridge or a cool place.
Don't grind too many coffee beans at once, it'll taste better the fresher it is.
I bought a stovetop espresso maker and I haven't looked back since - but you've got to like coffee to drink this (espresso) although you can use the espresso as a coffee base for other recipes e.g. Tiramasu or making cappucino etc...

good luck
Ground coffee keeps it's flavour and aroma remarkably well in a sealed freezer bag in the freezer.
