If you ask at a major supermarket which has an in-store bakery they'll usually give you some. Tesco have given me live yeast.
Morrisons did used to sell it but i can't say for certain that they still do.
I got some from Morrisons a month ago.
Most bakers shops will sell yeast
I think I read somewhere that there is an old law still on the books in the UK that if a grocery store/supermarket bakes bread, etc. and has it they have to give it to you free. You could ask for it in the bakery section and tell us if it is true.

I have had yeast from Sainsbury but not for free but it was only about 10 pence
