What is the significance of the salt and the lemon in relation to tequila? Everytime i drink tequila shots i insist upon the salt and lemon, but i dont really know why! Does anyone know?

Click http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_348.html for an answer, though it does suggest lime rather than lemon!

And don't forget that in Captain Cook's days lemons were called limes hence the term limeys even if they ate lemons - if you see what I mean!
